Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Galveston? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Galveston; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Galveston with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

FOUND brooches on The Strand, Galveston

Found brooches near The Strand in Galveston around 4:15 PM today. I was walking along a bench with a view of the Seawall when I noticed a small pile of jewelry tucked under the bench. I picked up several brooches and scanned the area, but no one showed up to claim them, so I brought them home to keep safe. The collection includes a turquoise hummingbird, a gold-tone sunflower, and a delicate enamel flower. If these belong to you, I will hold them securely until the rightful owner posts for recovery on the site.

Bright red beach umbrella with yellow trim

I found a bright red beach umbrella with a yellow trim this afternoon around 2:45pm along the Seawall Blvd near the 27th Street Beach Access in Galveston. The canopy is about 6 feet across and the fabric shows some sun fade; the fiberglass ribs are solid, and the pole has a small dent at the bottom. There’s a white sticker with the initials 'LJ' on the carrying sleeve, and it was lying in the sand near the bike racks by the lifeguard stand. If the owner sees this, please reach out so I can help you get it back—it's obviously been used and meant something to someone.

Silver Yamaha flute with blue velvet case near The Strand

I found a silver flute this afternoon around 3:15pm behind the Strand Theatre on The Strand in downtown Galveston. It's a Yamaha student model, silver-plated, about 26 inches long, tucked in a blue velvet-lined hard case with a few scuffs. The lid has a tiny dent, and the metal latch on the case is engraved with the initials 'L.K.' Inside, there was a folded sheet of music with 'L.K.' written on the top page. If this belongs to you, please share the initials on the case latch and describe the dent to verify. I'll happily hand it over to its owner.

Tan pebble-leather crossbody bag found

I found a tan pebble-leather crossbody bag this afternoon around 2:15pm outside the Grand 1894 Opera House on Mechanic Street in Galveston. It’s a Coach-branded bag with a dusty pink fabric lining and a pink tassel zipper pull. The bag is in good condition, with a small scuff on the bottom corner and a faint scratch on the front. Inside I found a tiny metal tag engraved 'JC' and a keyring with a faded photo of a dog; those things feel like sure-fire identifiers. I’d love to reunite it with its owner—bags like this carry memory, and I’d hate to see it go wandering.

Red concert ticket stub for Grand 1894 Opera House show

I found this afternoon around 2:45pm outside the Grand 1894 Opera House on Postoffice Street, near The Strand in Galveston. It's a red concert ticket stub printed on glossy cardstock, roughly 3x7 inches, with a perforated edge and a barcode on the back. Front reads 'Sunset Blues Fest' with the date and a small holographic sticker in the corner. It also has a tiny coffee stain near the bottom and a blue ink doodle of a wave in the margin—easy to spot if you've seen this exact ticket. I’m posting here because I know how nerve-wracking losing something like this can be; if you recognize it, please reach out so I can get it back to its rightful owner.

Found brown leather wallet with green pin

Found a brown leather wallet this afternoon around 4:15pm in the parking lot behind The Strand on 25th Street, Galveston. It's a genuine leather wallet, dark chocolate brown with a slightly worn corner and a small green enamel dolphin pin on the inside. Inside there are several cards and a faded photo of a kid in a red hoodie; there’s a coffee stain on the back and a zippered coin pocket. I scanned for an ID but couldn’t find the owner nearby, so I’m posting here in case someone recognizes it. If this is yours, email me at [email protected] to arrange a meetup and return it safely.
