Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Fredericksburg? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Fredericksburg; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Fredericksburg with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found flutes in downtown Fredericksburg

I was wandering through downtown Fredericksburg this past Saturday around 11:20 a.m., near the Fredericksburg Town Hall and the riverfront, when something shiny caught my eye under a bench. A navy flute case lay there, and when I opened it, two flutes glinted back at me, perfectly intact. They look well cared-for, with gentle scratches along the keys. I’m posting here because I know how important a musician’s instrument is to them. If these are yours, you’ll recognize the case and the familiar tone when you try them again near the river walk.

Found handheld and console in downtown Fredericksburg

While strolling downtown Fredericksburg, around 3:45 p.m. last Tuesday, I found a small black handheld device and a larger grey console resting on a bench near Hurkamp Park. They sat together with a tangled power cord, as if someone had just stepped away for a moment. I’m not sure whose they are, but they’re clearly cared for, and I wanted to help get them back to their owner. I’ve kept them in a safe spot and posted here to help reunite the rightful person. If this matches what you’ve been missing, report this listing through the site so you can be connected.

Found: Student ID along Fredericksburg riverfront

I was walking along the riverfront behind the Fredericksburg Visitor Center around 7:15 PM when I spotted a student ID resting on a bench by the Riverwalk. The card looked a bit scuffed, as if it had been out in the weather for a while. I picked it up and handed it to the information desk for safekeeping.

Found USB Drives near Hurkamp Park

I found two USB drives around 3:30 p.m. today near Hurkamp Park along Caroline Street in Fredericksburg. One drive is in a blue plastic case with a label that says 'Project X,' the other is plain but has a red sticker I didn't want to touch. They clearly belong to someone who was working on something important, and it feels right to try to get them back. I’m keeping them safe here, hoping the owner sees this post and reclaim them through the site.

Beagle mix with blue collar found near Fredericksburg Farmer's Market

Found a medium-sized beagle mix this afternoon around 4:15pm near the Fredericksburg Farmer's Market on Caroline Street. It’s wearing a blue collar with a brass tag that reads Milo and has a tiny white heart-shaped patch on its chest. The dog is friendly and clearly used to people, wagging its tail and leaning into me as I approached. One ear flops more than the other, and a frayed red leash is still attached to the collar. I’m hoping to get Milo back to his people—if this sounds like your dog, message me and we can coordinate a meet-up in downtown Fredericksburg.

Found navy tote bag with items behind Starbucks

I found a navy blue canvas tote bag with a white star pattern this morning around 9:15am in the parking lot behind the Starbucks on Caroline Street in downtown Fredericksburg. Inside there's a pink spiral notebook, a compact umbrella with a yellow handle, a USB drive in a floral case, and a set of keys on a teal lanyard. The bag shows a few scuffs on the bottom but the zipper still works, and there's a small handmade ceramic keychain shaped like a guitar attached to the handle. Not sure who it belongs to, but I figured someone would be missing it and I'd post here so it can get back to its owner.
