Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Fredericksburg? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Fredericksburg; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Fredericksburg with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found USB Drives near Hurkamp Park

I found two USB drives around 3:30 p.m. today near Hurkamp Park along Caroline Street in Fredericksburg. One drive is in a blue plastic case with a label that says 'Project X,' the other is plain but has a red sticker I didn't want to touch. They clearly belong to someone who was working on something important, and it feels right to try to get them back. I’m keeping them safe here, hoping the owner sees this post and reclaim them through the site.

Beagle mix with blue collar found near Fredericksburg Farmer's Market

Found a medium-sized beagle mix this afternoon around 4:15pm near the Fredericksburg Farmer's Market on Caroline Street. It’s wearing a blue collar with a brass tag that reads Milo and has a tiny white heart-shaped patch on its chest. The dog is friendly and clearly used to people, wagging its tail and leaning into me as I approached. One ear flops more than the other, and a frayed red leash is still attached to the collar. I’m hoping to get Milo back to his people—if this sounds like your dog, message me and we can coordinate a meet-up in downtown Fredericksburg.

Found navy tote bag with items behind Starbucks

I found a navy blue canvas tote bag with a white star pattern this morning around 9:15am in the parking lot behind the Starbucks on Caroline Street in downtown Fredericksburg. Inside there's a pink spiral notebook, a compact umbrella with a yellow handle, a USB drive in a floral case, and a set of keys on a teal lanyard. The bag shows a few scuffs on the bottom but the zipper still works, and there's a small handmade ceramic keychain shaped like a guitar attached to the handle. Not sure who it belongs to, but I figured someone would be missing it and I'd post here so it can get back to its owner.

Found leopard gecko near Walmart on Plank Road

I found a small leopard gecko this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind the Walmart on Plank Road in Fredericksburg. It's about 3 inches long, sandy brown with dark brown spots, and a plump tail. It has a tiny white scar above its left eye and a small chip on the tail tip, which should help ID. It seems healthy and curious, and I slipped it into a ventilated tote with a little warm hide while I figure out the owner. If this is yours, reply here with details like color pattern and eye color, and you can reach me at [email protected].

Framed abstract painting in teal frame

I found a framed abstract painting this afternoon around 1:45pm outside the Fredericksburg Visitor Center on Caroline Street. It's roughly 12 by 16 inches, acrylic on canvas, in a bright teal metal frame with a white mat. On the bottom right corner there's a small signature reading 'L. Chen', and there's a tiny sticker on the back from ArtSpot Fredericksburg with edition notes. The painting shows a sunset over a river with warm oranges and cool blues, and it really stood out as I walked by Old Town. The frame has a few light scuffs along the left edge, but overall it's in good condition. If this belongs to someone, I’d love to help get it back.

Cockatiel with orange cheeks and yellow crest

I found a cockatiel this afternoon around 3:15pm in downtown Fredericksburg, near Hurkamp Park behind the Farmers Market on Prince Edward Street. It's a small gray bird with a bright yellow crest and orange cheek patches, about the size of a robin. There’s a red leg band on the right leg with the code FP-22. It has a tiny white speck on its left wing and a faint rust streak near the tail from old cage wear. The bird seemed pretty friendly, chirping when people approached and perched on a bench for a moment before fluttering back onto the railing. If someone recognizes it, I’m happy to coordinate a meetup at Hurkamp Park to verify ownership.
