Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Fargo / Moorhead? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Fargo / Moorhead; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Fargo / Moorhead with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found: Studs near Fargo Theatre, Fargo

I was heading back from the Fargo Theatre shortly after my shift when I spotted a small pouch on the ground near the entrance on Broadway. Inside were a pair of gold studs, one slightly bent, the other tucked in its original case. They looked personal and valuable, not the kind of thing that would have been left behind by accident. I tucked the pouch into my jacket and kept watch until I could post it here, hoping the owner would recognize the memory tied to those earrings. If this is yours, contact through the site.

Found: Handheld and Console near Fargo Theatre

Hi, I'm Emma Larson. I found a handheld gaming device and a small black console case outside the Fargo Theatre around 7:15 p.m. on a Friday, along the sidewalk on 1st Avenue in downtown Fargo. It looked like it had been tucked under a bench, with a blue charger tangled beside it. I picked it up and kept it safe, hoping the owner would see this listing and recognize their gear. It means a lot to me to help reunite someone with a bit of daily joy after a long day.

Two microwaves found near West Acres Mall

On Saturday around 11:15 AM, I was walking behind West Acres Mall in Fargo when I spotted a shopping cart with two microwaves inside, cords coiled and plastic wrap still clinging to the doors. It looked like they'd been moved in a hurry and left there to cool. I carried them to the mall security desk and explained what I found, hoping the owner would claim them soon. It felt reassuring to be part of reuniting someone's everyday kitchen gear with its rightful owner.

Gray TravelEase neck pillow with red strap

I found a gray memory-foam neck pillow this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind West Acres Mall on 41st Street, Fargo. It’s a TravelEase neck pillow, about the size of a forearm, with a soft knit cover. A bright red elastic strap keeps it snug, and there’s a tiny embroidered compass logo near the seam. There’s a bit of wear along the edge and a fabric tag with the initials 'P.P.' stitched on the inner side. If this is yours, I’m hoping to help you get it back—travel gear like this matters on long trips, and I’d hate for someone to lose it.

Le Creuset orange dutch oven found near West Acres

I found a Le Creuset orange enameled cast-iron Dutch oven this afternoon around 3:15pm in the parking lot behind West Acres Mall, off 41st Street South in Fargo. It's a sturdy 4-quart pot with that glossy saffron-orange enamel on the outside and a pale cream interior. The lid has a black knob with the Le Creuset logo and there’s a tiny glaze crack along the rim that’s visible but doesn’t affect the lid’s fit. There’s also a faint sticker on the bottom that says '4 QT' and someone wrote initials in Sharpie near the handle, which could help ID the owner. If you know who it belongs to, I’d love to get it back to you—this pot clearly meant a lot to someone.
