Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Fairbanks, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Fairbanks and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Fairbanks so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Golden Syrian hamster with white blaze

I lost my golden Syrian hamster yesterday around 3pm near the Morris Thompson Cultural Center on 2nd Avenue in downtown Fairbanks. He's tiny, the size of a ping-pong ball, with a fluffy golden coat and a white blaze on his forehead. He wears a light blue fleece harness with a tiny silver bell, and there's a small black dot on his left ear—easy to spot if you know him. He’s always been a bit shy but curious, and this little guy means the world to my daughter; he’s been with us since before Christmas, a gift that’s sentimental. If you’ve seen him or someone found him, please reply here or email me at [email protected]. Thanks so much.

Leopard gecko missing, orange with white spots

I lost my leopard gecko yesterday around 3pm. It was in its glass terrarium on the living room desk when it slipped out through a small crack in the lid. I think it wandered toward downtown Fairbanks, last seen near the Morris Thompson Cultural Center on 2nd Ave. It’s about 6 inches long, orange with cream spots, and the tail is slightly kinked from a past tail drop. There’s a tiny blue speck behind its right eye that you might notice if you look closely. This gecko means a lot to me—I've had it since last summer and it was a gift from my sister. If you’ve seen it, please email me and I’ll arrange a pickup right away.

Calico cat with blue collar missing near Costco

I lost my calico cat Luna yesterday around 3pm. She's a medium-sized domestic shorthair with white fur and orange-black patches, and a bright blue collar with a tiny silver bell. She also has a small notch in her left ear and a fluffy white chest tuft that makes her easy to spot. She was last seen near the Costco on College Road, with sightings heading toward the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. Luna is more than a pet—she's been with me for years and has sentimental value; I'm really worried something could happen to her out there. If anyone finds her, please reply here or text me; I’d be incredibly grateful to bring her home.

Blue reflective dog leash with name tag, Fairbanks

Hi, I lost my blue reflective dog leash this afternoon around 4pm in Fairbanks. It’s a Ruffwear Front Range leash, about 6 feet long, bright cobalt blue with reflective stitching. There’s a tiny white paw-print charm on the metal clip and a small fray near the handle from daily use. I last had it while walking near the Morris Thompson Cultural Center on College Road, and I’ve been panicked since—my rescue dog responds to that leash and it has sentimental value. If anyone found it, please text me; I’d really appreciate getting it back so we can continue our daily walks.

Cockatiel with yellow crest, gray body, missing

I lost my pet cockatiel yesterday around 3pm after it slipped out of its cage in my apartment on College Road near the UAF campus in Fairbanks. It is mostly gray, about the size of a small parrot, with a bright yellow crest and orange cheek patches. There is a green leg band on the right leg with the inscription AK-22. The left wing has a tiny feather snag near the tip that makes it stand out. It is very friendly and I am really worried; this bird is a family member and holds a lot of sentimental value. If you see it, please text me right away; I would be forever grateful.

Small brown-and-white lop rabbit with blue collar

I lost my rabbit Lola yesterday around 3pm near the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, behind the Geophysical Institute on College Road. Lola is a small lop-eared bunny, mostly brown with white patches on her belly and a blue collar with a tiny silver bell. She has a distinctive white tip on her left ear and one ear that flicks more than the other. She’s shy at first but very sweet once she trusts you, and she was a gift to my daughter, so it’s also sentimental for us. If you find her, please text me right away—we’re really hoping to bring her home soon.
