Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Essex, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Essex and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Essex so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Grey tabby cat with red collar missing near Chelmsford Riverside

I lost my grey tabby cat yesterday around 6:15pm near the Riverside area behind Bond Street in Chelmsford, Essex. Milo is a medium-sized cat with grey stripes, white paws, and a white chest, and he wears a bright red collar with a tiny silver bell. He has a distinctive notch on his left ear and a small scar on his nose from an old scrape. I’m really worried—Milo usually sticks close to home, and it’s been raining since yesterday. If you’ve seen him around the Bond Street/Riverside corridor or hear a faint bell jingling, please let me know so I can bring him home.

Leopard gecko with brown spots, yellow body

I lost my leopard gecko yesterday around 3pm near Castle Park, by the bandstand and duck pond in Colchester, Essex. It's a small reptile, about 4 inches long, with a pale yellow body and brown spots. It has a tiny blue dot near the base of its tail and a slightly kinked tail from a previous injury. It lives in a clear 12x6 inch terrarium with a black lid, and I must have left the lid slightly loose while I was at the park. This gecko is beloved by my daughter and has sentimental value to us; I would really appreciate it if you could reach out so we can bring our little friend back home.

Lost blue parakeet named Sky with a yellow beak in Essex park, United Kingdom.

I lost my blue parakeet named Sky while we were out in the Essex park last afternoon. He flew out of his cage while I was setting it up for some fresh air, and I couldn't catch him in time. Sky is friendly but may be a bit scared. He has a yellow beak and cheerful little chirps, and he really loves sunflower seeds. If anyone finds him, please let me know!
