Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Dothan? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Dothan; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Dothan with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found xylophones near the Dothan Civic Center

While taking a quick break after a community rehearsal at the Dothan Civic Center plaza around 1:30 PM, I found two xylophones left by a bench. They looked out of place with their dusty keys and wooden frames, like they were waiting for someone to claim them. I kept them safe in the shade and hoped the owner would see this listing and come forward. I’d love to help reunite these instruments with the person who owns them.

Found carry-ons near Dothan Regional Airport

I found these carry-ons outside the Dothan Regional Airport's main entrance this morning around 11:45 a.m. There are two bags: a black hard-shell suitcase with a red strap and a gray duffel bag. I checked for identifying tags, but there wasn’t anything obvious. I turned them in at the airport lost-and-found to do the right thing and hope the owner sees this listing soon. Please check the site for next steps, and thanks for helping reunite someone with their belongings.

FOUND travel adapters in Dothan, Alabama

Last Friday at about 4:15 p.m., I found these travel adapters under a bench near the Landmark Park entrance on South Oates Street in Dothan. They were in a small black mesh pouch with a few different plug types and a coiled charger cord. I know how frustrating it is to lose a charger while traveling, so I kept them safe and decided to post here instead of tossing them in the lost-and-found bin. If the owner recognizes them, I hope you will see this and claim them here on the site.

Blue dog harness with neon-green stitching

I found a small blue dog harness with neon-green stitching this afternoon around 3pm behind the Dothan Civic Center parking lot off West Main Street. It's a size small nylon harness, in good condition, with a red heart-shaped metal tag engraved 'Milo' and a tiny paw-print stitched on the chest strap. The buckle is secure and the fabric shows little wear. If this belongs to your pup, describe the tag name or harness details and I’ll arrange a pickup—really hoping to reunite it with its owner.

Found black leather wallet with red interior

I found a black leather wallet this afternoon around 3:15pm in the parking lot behind The Mall at Wiregrass on US-231 South, near the Chick-fil-A entrance. It's a slim bifold with a red fabric lining that shows when you open it. There’s a tiny lightning-bolt emboss on the inner card slot and a small scratch along the bottom edge. Inside, I can see a faded photo of a dog and a couple of cards tucked in. If this is yours, reply here with the name on the ID and a distinguishing detail from inside so we can verify and arrange a pickup near guest services.

Found JBL Bluetooth speaker with blue grille

Found a compact JBL Bluetooth speaker this afternoon around 2:30pm in the parking lot behind Grandview Cinema on Main Street, Dothan. It's a small black speaker about the size of a soda can, with a blue fabric grille and a bright red bumper along the edges. There's a tiny paw-print sticker on the back and a minor dent on the bottom corner. I tested a quick pair attempt with my phone, and it connected without a hitch, so it seems fully functional. If it's yours, tell me the model name, describe the sticker, and what color the grille is, and we can arrange pickup locally in Dothan.
