Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Chicago, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Chicago and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Chicago so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Red Rabbitgoo dog harness with blue paw tag

I lost my red Rabbitgoo dog harness yesterday around 3pm. It’s an adjustable harness, size small, bright red with black straps and a thin reflective stripe along the chest. There's a small blue paw-print tag and a silver name tag that says 'Niko' on the chest. I was walking with my corgi, Niko, near the Lincoln Park Zoo entrance on Clark Street when we last had him, and the harness slipped off during a busy moment near the fountain. It’s sentimental because it’s the everyday harness we use for our walks, and I’d be grateful to get it back if anyone finds it.

Leopard gecko, yellow with brown spots

I lost my leopard gecko yesterday around 3pm. He’s a small, bright yellow gecko with brown spots and a chunky tail, about 4 inches long, and he has a distinctive white speck under his chin plus a notch on the tip of his left hind toe. He lives in a 6x8 inch glass terrarium with a heat lamp; the lid has a tiny dent from a fall. I was by the Lincoln Park Conservatory area on Stockton Drive when he slipped out, and I’ve been scouring the area since. He’s been with me since I adopted him as a rescue; I’m really hoping to get him back—he’s the goofy, calming presence in my week.

Red-eared slider turtle lost near Lincoln Park Lakefront Trail

I lost my red-eared slider turtle named Saffron yesterday around 3pm along the Lakefront Trail near North Avenue Beach in Chicago. He's about 4 inches across, bright green with yellow striping and distinct red patches behind each eye. The shell has a tiny dent on the front left scute, and there's a small white crescent-shaped mark on the underside of his shell that makes him easy to spot. This turtle is really special to my family—my son saved up for months to buy him, and he's been part of weekend walks ever since. If anyone spots him, please help bring him home; we'd be incredibly grateful.

I lost my parakeet named Kiwi after he flew out the window while I was cleaning his cage. It happened in my apartment near Lincoln Park in Chicago.
