Lost wallet or purse — immediate steps

The first moves to make when your wallet or purse goes missing — cards, ID, and protecting yourself from fraud.

A lost wallet or purse in Charleston means two jobs at once: stopping fraud and replacing what's gone. The first hour matters most.

  1. Freeze your cards. Open each bank's app and freeze or cancel every debit and credit card. Most apps let you lock a card instantly and order a replacement.
  2. Check for unfamiliar activity. Review recent transactions and report anything you didn't make.
  3. Protect your identity. If ID was inside, take steps to guard against identity theft and consider a fraud alert or protective registration.
  4. Replace your ID and licence. Start replacements for your driver's licence or ID card through the relevant authority for your area.
  5. Retrace and report. Contact the last places you visited in Charleston and report the loss to the police non-emergency line if it may have been stolen.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-wallet listing for Charleston — many wallets are handed in and reunited this way.

Lost keys on blue lanyard near City Market

I lost my keys yesterday around 3pm near the Charleston City Market on Meeting Street. It's a compact blue nylon lanyard with a pair of brass keys and one little silver key tagged to a red enamel heart. One key is a brass house key stamped 'A-173' with a heart-shaped bow, and the other is a worn silver mailbox key with a tiny red enamel dot. The lanyard is a bit frayed, the clip is a bit loose, and the whole thing has sentimental value because it's the key to my apartment and a small reminder of my grandmother who lived downtown. If anyone found them, I'd really appreciate getting them back.

Keyring set with owl charm on red lanyard

I lost my keys yesterday around 3pm outside the Charleston City Market entrance on Market Street. They’re on a red braided lanyard with a bright green enamel owl charm. There are four keys on the ring — a silver Schlage entry key, a smaller brass key engraved '101', and a car key with a black plastic fob. The lanyard is a little frayed at the ends, and the owl charm has a tiny scratch. It means a lot to me because the owl charm was a gift from my grandmother, and I really need to get them back.

Lost black Ray-Ban sunglasses with a slight scratch on the right lens near a bench at Marion Square.

I lost my black Ray-Ban sunglasses while walking around Marion Square in downtown Charleston this past weekend. I took them off to wipe them down and must've left them on the bench. They have a slight scratch on the right lens. If anyone finds them, I would really appreciate getting them back!
