Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Central NJ, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Central NJ and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Central NJ so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Orange tabby cat with blue collar, lost near Princeton

I lost my orange tabby cat with a white bib yesterday around 6pm near Nassau Street by the Princeton University campus. He's wearing a light blue collar with a small brass bell, and he has a tiny notch on his left ear. He's usually very friendly but will hide from strangers, so he might still be afraid if you spot him. This cat means a lot to my family; my daughter is worried and keeps asking about him. If you've seen him, I'd really appreciate any help in bringing him back home.

Orange dog harness with paw patch

I lost my bright orange dog harness yesterday around 5pm near the Quaker Bridge Mall parking lot in Hamilton Township, Central NJ. It's a medium adjustable harness with a neon orange reflective stripe and a small blue paw-print patch on the chest strap. The quick-release buckle is still solid, and there's a tiny stitch tear near the right shoulder. My dog, a twelve-pound corgi-mix, wears it daily and gets anxious without it. If anyone found it, I’d really appreciate getting it back—it's sentimental because it was a gift from my sister.

Lost gray tabby cat with pink collar

Hi, I’m Priya Patel. I lost my gray tabby cat Milo yesterday around 3pm. He’s a medium-sized cat with a soft gray coat, white paws, and a pink collar with a tiny silver bell; there’s also a small notch in his right ear and a faint scar on his left hind leg. I last saw him near the Princeton Shopping Center on Nassau Street, between Barnes & Noble and the cafe by the bus stop, and I’m worried he slipped into a back alley behind the shops. Milo means a lot to me—this cat is my comfort here in Central NJ, and I’d really like him back. If you’ve seen him, please message me and we can arrange a safe meet-up in Princeton.

Golden retriever missing near Princeton red collar

I lost my golden retriever, Maple, yesterday around 3pm. She's about 65 pounds, with a glossy golden coat and a bright red collar with a bone-shaped tag that says 'Maple.' She has a small white patch on her chest and one ear that flops. We were near Nassau Street by the Princeton University campus in Central NJ when a loud bus startled her and she slipped away toward the Princeton Battlefield state park area. Maple is incredibly friendly but can be shy around strangers. This dog means the world to us—she's my daughter's best friend and really belongs at home. If anyone spots her, please email [email protected] and I’ll come right away.
