Lost your phone? Step-by-step recovery

Carrier contacts, Find My / Find My Device, and the local steps to recover or secure a lost phone.

Losing your phone in Boston is stressful, but acting quickly improves your odds of getting it back and limits the damage if it's gone for good. Work through these steps in order.

  1. Locate it remotely. Use Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android) from another phone or computer to see the phone on a map, play a sound, and mark it as lost. Lost Mode locks the device and shows a contact message on the screen.
  2. Lock and message it. If it's nearby, the sound may be enough. If it isn't, enable Lost Mode and add a phone number where you can be reached.
  3. Call your carrier. Report the phone lost so they can suspend service and block the IMEI. This stops anyone running up charges and flags the handset across networks.
  4. Change key passwords. Update your email, banking, and social passwords, especially if the phone wasn't locked. Sign the device out of those accounts where you can.
  5. Report it locally. File a report with the police non-emergency line for Boston — a crime reference number is often required for insurance claims.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-phone listing for Boston so anyone who finds it can reach you privately.

Keep checking the map periodically — a phone that's off may reappear when it's charged.

Hi everyone, I lost my iPhone 12 Pro on 4/11/2026 between 4pm and 7pm somewhere between Boston Common and the new Uniqlo store at downtown crossing. My phone has a case with my school logo at the back and lockscreen picture of a beautiful autumn tree. If anyone happens to have found it, please kindly let me know. Black Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones with dent

I lost my black Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones yesterday around 3pm. They’re the matte black over-ear model, with a small dent on the top of the headband near the hinge and a faint scratch on the left ear cup. They came with a black soft pouch and a gray USB-C cable; the pouch zipper is a bit stiff. I was near the Boston Public Library in Copley Square and then wandered toward Boylston Street. They were a gift from my sister and really help me get through long commutes, so I’d be incredibly grateful to get them back.

Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, black, lost Boston

I lost my Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones yesterday around 3pm. They're black, over-ear cans in decent shape, with a tiny dent on the right ear cup and a green fabric headband that’s worn from daily use. I think I left them near the Boston Public Library steps on Copley Square after rushing to catch the T. There’s also a small blue sticker with the initials 'BP' under the left ear cup. They were a gift from my sister and mean a lot to me, so I’d really appreciate getting them back. If anyone found them, please text me here and we can arrange a quick pickup in Back Bay.

Nintendo Switch with neon Joy-Cons and galaxy sticker

I lost my Nintendo Switch yesterday around 3pm near the Copley Square entrance of the Boston Public Library. It's the standard Switch with neon red and blue Joy-Cons, tucked in a black silicone case, and I've got a faint screen protector with a tiny scratch along the top edge. On the back there's a small galaxy sticker I slapped on last year, so you'll spot it pretty easily. It's pretty sentimental to me (gift from my sister, used every weekend), and I'm really hoping to get it back. If you found it around Back Bay, please message me so we can arrange a pickup.

Lost black portable hard drive in a black case near Harvard Square coffee shop in Cambridge.

I think I left my black portable hard drive at a coffee shop in Cambridge near Harvard Square on November 10. It was in a black case, and it has some important files on it for work and personal projects. I retraced my steps but couldn't find it anywhere. If anyone has seen it, please reach out!
