Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Bakersfield, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Bakersfield and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Bakersfield so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Calico cat, Luna, lost in Bakersfield

Hey, I'm really worried because my calico cat, Luna, disappeared yesterday around 3pm. She's about 9 months old, around 8 pounds, with orange and black patches and a white chest. She has a tiny pink collar with a small silver bell and a white heart-shaped patch on her chest. I last saw her near the Starbucks on 19th Street and California Ave in Bakersfield, and she darted into a little alley behind the shops, so she might be hiding. She's generally friendly but timid with strangers, so if you spot her please call softly and leave food near your door—she's my little shadow and I really need her back.

Bearded dragon with orange bands, lost near Valley Plaza

Bearded dragon, about 12 inches long, tan with bright orange bands along its back. Yesterday around 3pm I was in the parking lot behind Valley Plaza Mall on Panama Lane near California Ave when a gust knocked over his terrarium and he bolted. He is calm but skittish, and has a tiny white scar under his left eye plus a blue tip on the end of his tail. This is my kid's pet and it means a lot to us; please, if you find him, I will meet you at the mall or pick him up nearby.

Lost yellow-faced cockatiel near Bakersfield River Walk

I lost my yellow-faced cockatiel Mango yesterday around 3pm near the downtown Bakersfield Public Library on Truxtun Ave. He’s a small gray-bodied bird with a bright yellow crest and orange cheek patches, about 12 inches from beak to tail. He has a tiny blue feather at the tip of his left wing and a faint nick on his upper beak. He also wears a small silver leg band with the numbers 482-LT. This bird is more than a pet to me—he’s my daughter's buddy and a reminder of good times; I really need him back. If someone spots him, please call or text me; I’ll be grateful beyond words.

Lost blue dog collar with a bone-shaped name tag reading 'Buddy' in a park near Bakersfield.

I lost my dog's collar in the park near Bakersfield while we were out for a walk last Saturday. The collar is blue with a bone-shaped name tag that reads 'Buddy'. It has a few scratches but is in otherwise good condition. I'm really worried someone might find it and not know how much it means to me and my pup.

Lost small brown hamster with a white patch on head last seen in backyard in Bakersfield.

I last saw Mr. Nibbles in our backyard on Saturday afternoon. He's a small, brown hamster with a white patch on his head and loves to run around in his little wheel. We suspect he may have escaped through a small opening in the fence. If anyone has seen him or has any information, please reach out. He's very friendly and loved dearly by my kids!
