Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Austin, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Austin and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Austin so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Lost rabbits near Zilker Park, Austin

Hey, I’m Diego Ramirez. I lost my rabbits tonight near Zilker Park around 7:45 PM Friday, by Barton Springs Pool with a view of downtown. A gust of wind startled me; the two rabbits bolted and I couldn’t keep up as they vanished into the brush by the dog run. They’re part of my family and carry a lot of memories from my grandmother’s hands, so I’m hoping for a safe return. If you saw two rabbits around dusk near Zilker Park, please help me bring them home.

Lost Canines in Austin, TX

On Friday, January 9, around 7:15 p.m., I let my two Canines out in the yard of my apartment on East 7th Street, and they slipped toward the river trail by Zilker Park. I walked the path and called their names for twenty minutes, but they didn’t come back. They’re friendly but shy with strangers, a wiry beagle and a big brown shepherd mix, and they’re everything to me. I’m worried about them and hoping someone in SoCo or near Barton Springs saw them and kept an eye out until I found them.

Gray tabby cat with pink collar and bell

I lost my gray tabby cat Milo yesterday around 3pm near Zilker Park in Austin. He's a medium-sized, short-haired cat with a white chest and white paws, and he wears a bright pink collar with a tiny bell that jingles when he walks. He has a small notch in his left ear and a faint scratch on his right hind leg. He usually comes when called, but he can be shy around strangers. This cat means a lot to me—he was a gift from my mom and has been part of our family since we adopted him last year—and I really need him back. If you've seen him around Barton Springs or along South Lamar, please message me with any info. Thank you.
