Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Albany, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Albany and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Albany so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Lost: Hamsters near Albany's Washington Park

I lost my hamsters this afternoon around 3:20 pm near Washington Park in Albany. They’re tiny, tawny with a dark stripe along their backs, and they love to hide in cables and under benches. I had them in a soft carrier when I stopped to get a snack at a corner shop, and the door must have popped open. I’ve walked the park's paths by Empire State Plaza, calling their names, hoping someone found them and kept them safe.

Brindle terrier mix, blue harness, white chest

Yesterday around 6pm, my brindle terrier Rex bolted from me when we were leaving a coffee shop near the Empire State Plaza on State Street in Albany. He’s about 40 pounds, short-haired with a white chest patch and a slightly bent left ear. He’s wearing a blue reflective harness and a blue name tag that says 'Rex' along with my phone number. He's really important to my family - my kids adore him and he has sentimental value because he was a gift from my late aunt. If anyone finds him, text me and we can meet up anywhere in Albany to pick him up.

I lost my bright green parakeet named Kiwi while walking my dog around Washington Park in Albany yesterday evening. She flew off and hasn't returned since. Kiwi is very friendly and knows some basic whistles. I’m really hoping to get her back, so please let me know if you see her!
