Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Akron / Canton? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Akron / Canton; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Akron / Canton with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Makita 18V cordless drill in yellow/black case

I found a Makita 18V LXT cordless drill this afternoon around 2:15pm behind the Home Depot on Arlington Road in Akron. It’s in a black hard case with a few scratches on the lid and a faded blue Makita sticker on the battery. The drill looks lightly used, and the battery still holds a decent charge. Inside the case there’s a small bit set and a red Sharpie tag with the initials 'A.R.' scribbled underneath the handle. If this belongs to you, I’d really like to help get it back—tools like this can be priceless for a project.

Bearded dragon found near Kroger on West Market St

Found a bearded dragon this afternoon around 1:45pm outside the Kroger on West Market Street in Akron. It's about 9 inches long from nose to tail, tan with a darker stripe along the back and a bright orange beard that shows when it's curious. There are two identifying marks: a small circular scar on the left hind leg and a tiny chip on the tail tip. I kept it safe in a ventilated tote and warmed it with a small heat pad while I tried to locate an owner, because I know how much a pet means to a family.

Blue ceramic vase found outside Akron Public Library

I found a blue ceramic vase this morning around 9:15am outside the Akron Public Library on Main Street. It’s about 9 inches tall and 5 inches across, with a hand-painted cobalt glaze and delicate white floral accents. There’s a small nick along the rim and a star-shaped sticker on the bottom that reads 'Acorn Studio.' The glaze shows a bit of wear in spots, so it feels like a well-loved piece. If this belongs to someone, I’d be happy to get it back to its owner and put this little treasure back on its shelf.

Rose gold bracelet with heart charm found in Canton

I found a rose gold-tone bracelet this afternoon around 2:15pm outside the Canton Palace Theatre on Market Ave N. It's slim, about 6.5 inches long, with a delicate chain and a tiny heart charm. The inside of the clasp is stamped with a small letter 'L' and there are a couple of faint scratches along the clasp from wear. It's in pretty good condition overall. If anyone recognizes it, drop me a message here and I’ll help reunite you. I know how sentimental something like this can be.

Blue nylon dog harness with paw-tag and reflective stripe

Found a blue nylon dog harness this afternoon around 3:15pm near the Akron Civic Theatre on S. Main Street. It's a medium size, with a bright neon yellow reflective stripe down the middle and a sturdy metal D-ring. There's a tiny paw-print charm dangling from the strap and a metal tag engraved with 'Luna' and the phone number 555-0142. The harness is a bit dusty from the street, but otherwise in good condition. I know how important a harness is for a pup's safety, so I’m hoping to help get it back to its owner.

Hand-painted ceramic vase with blue-gold florals

I found a hand-painted ceramic vase this afternoon around 2:15 pm in the parking lot behind the Akron Art Museum on West Market Street. It's about 12 inches tall, white with cobalt blue and gold floral patterns along the rim, and there's a tiny chip on the lip that gives it character. On the bottom there's a sticker that says 'Made in Peru' and a faint signature that looks like 'A. Rivera' scratched near the foot. I picked it up because it stood out by the bike racks and I didn't want it to get knocked over, but I know it's probably someone’s special piece. If this vase belongs to you, I’m happy to coordinate a pickup near the museum entrance.
