I was at the Watertown Public Library entrance around 6:15 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2024, when I realized my enamel pins had vanished from the pocket of my denim jacket. They’re a tiny set—one with a compass and one shaped like a rocket—on plain silver posts. Those pins were my grandmother's keepsakes, and losing them felt like losing her all over again, especially after a long day. I walked the sidewalk along Jefferson Street toward the library steps, hoping someone picked them up near the brick planter by the entrance, but they weren’t there.
