Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Greenville / Upstate? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.

  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Greenville / Upstate with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found: Postcards in Greenville / Upstate

I was strolling along Main Street near Falls Park on the Reedy River in Greenville / Upstate, South Carolina, United States on Tuesday around 11:15 a.m. when I spotted a damp stack of postcards tucked under a bench. They are a jumble of mid-century scenes, handwritten notes, and bright stamps. I picked them up and kept them safe, imagining the owner might be missing them—pages showing the Reedy River, the Liberty Bridge, and small-town landscapes. I would be glad to see these belong to their rightful owner.

Found Anker power bank near Main Street in Greenville

I found a black Anker PowerCore 20,000mAh portable charger this afternoon around 3:15 pm in the parking lot behind the Starbucks on Main Street in downtown Greenville. It's in pretty good condition, with a slightly scuffed top edge and a textured rubberized body. There’s a small red sticker on the back with the initials A1, plus a tiny dent along the bottom corner that I noticed when I picked it up. Looks like it belongs to someone who relies on it—happy to get it back to them. If this is yours, share the sticker detail or last four digits of your phone on the app so we can match it.

Red plaid scarf with fringe found near Falls Park

I found a red plaid scarf this afternoon around 4:15pm near Falls Park on the Reedy, by the pedestrian bridge. It's a medium-weight acrylic-wool blend, about 60 inches long with a fuzzy fringe and a small pine-tree enamel pin attached to the corner. The tag says 'CozyWear' in white letters. It’s in pretty good shape, just a bit wrinkled from being on the ground. I’ll be happy to return it to its owner; if this is yours, message me here and we can arrange a safe meetup near the Falls Park Visitor Center.

Neon Nike swim shorts, men's medium, found

I found a pair of neon lime green Nike swim shorts with black side panels this afternoon around 3:15pm, lying on a park bench near Falls Park on the Reedy River in downtown Greenville. They’re men’s medium, quick-dry fabric, with a black drawstring and a slightly faded Nike swoosh on the left leg. There’s a small blue silicone key ring clipped to the waistband and a faint chlorine stain near the hem. Inside the pocket, there’s an embroidered initials patch that reads 'J.S.' If these are yours, I’m happy to meet up anywhere around the Liberty Bridge area to return them.
