Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Elko? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Elko; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Elko with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found passports near Elko County Courthouse

I found a brown leather passport sleeve lying on the curb outside the Elko County Courthouse on 4th Street at about 4:15 p.m. today. The pages inside showed a family name and a couple of passport photos, and it hit me how personal and urgent these documents are. I felt a mix of relief and responsibility, like I’d stumbled onto a story that wasn’t mine to tell. I left the sleeve on a bench just outside the courthouse so the rightful owner would see it when they return to town.

Hand-painted ceramic vase with cobalt blue flowers

I found a hand-painted ceramic vase yesterday around 5:15 pm near the Elko Public Library on 4th Street. It's about 9 inches tall, white glaze with a cobalt blue floral motif, and there's a small chip on the rim, plus a faint signature on the bottom that reads 'Mira T'. It looked tucked behind a folded newspaper on the library steps, and I could tell someone likely cares about it—it's really pretty and seems sentimental. If you know who this belongs to, drop a note here and we can arrange a pickup.

Blue plush dragon found in Elko

Found a blue plush dragon with orange horns this afternoon around 2:15 pm behind the Elko Public Library on 5th Street. It's about 12 inches tall, super soft, with bright yellow wings and a small tag inside the ear that reads 'Draco'. The fur is a little matted from sitting on a bench, but otherwise in good condition. I know how much a stuffed toy can mean to a kid, and I’d really like to see it back with its owner. If this belongs to your child, I can meet you near the library entrance or at the community park across 5th Street to return it.

Silver flute in black case with engraving

I found a silver Yamaha flute this afternoon around 3pm behind the Northeastern Nevada Museum on Main Street in Elko. The flute has a bright silver body with three gold-tone keys and a small dent near the lip plate; the black hard case is scuffed, and the zipper pull is a bit loose. There's an engraving on the case lid that looks like 'A.E.' and I also noticed a pink cleaning rod tucked inside the pocket. If you're the owner, please share the brand and the engraving to verify ownership, and I'll arrange a safe handoff.

Found bright blue Nike swim shorts, Elko

I found a pair of Nike swim shorts this afternoon around 3:15pm near the Elko City Pool entrance on 7th Street. They’re bright blue, size L, with a neon lime-green drawstring and a white Nike swoosh on the left leg. There’s a small sunscreen stain near the bottom hem and a white tag inside that reads 'Nike Swim, size L'. They seem in good condition aside from that damp pool smell. I’m hoping to get them back to their owner—if you can tell me the brand details and the distinguishing features, DM me and we’ll verify.

Silver ring with turquoise centerpiece and initials

I found a silver ring this afternoon around 3:15pm outside the Penny Lane Café on 4th Street in downtown Elko. It's a sterling silver band, about a size 7, with a small oval turquoise inlay in the center and delicate marcasite accents around the bezel. Inside the band there's a neat engraving that reads 'M.J.'—looks handmade and personal. The ring is lightly worn but in good condition, not bent, and seems like it must have a story behind it. I get that it probably means a lot to its owner, and I’d love to help get it back to them. If this is yours, share the engraving details and the size you think it is to confirm the match.
