Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Southwest TX? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Southwest TX; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Southwest TX with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found travel adapters near Fort Stockton rest area.

I was fueling up at the Fort Stockton rest area off I-10 in Southwest Texas around 6:15 p.m. last Friday when a small black pouch with USB-C and micro-USB adapters spilled from my backpack. The set includes a universal travel adapter and a few plug adapters; they were tucked inside a worn black case with a silver zipper. It looked like someone might be on a cross-Texas trip, so I held onto them and posted here. If these belong to you, please reach out through the site so we can arrange a safe pickup.

Found sheet music in southwest Texas.

On Tuesday at 6:15 PM, I found a folder of sheet music wedged beneath a park bench along Alpine's town square, just outside the old courthouse. The pages are yellowed and creased, with a few notes smudged from years of practice. It looks like someone had been preparing for a small-town recital, the pieces clearly cherished. I felt a mix of curiosity and responsibility, thinking of someone who spent evenings with these sheets. I’m posting them here hoping the owner recognizes them.

Red paperback copy of The Outsiders found

I found a red paperback copy of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton this afternoon around 1:30pm near the bus stop by the corner of Main Street and Campbell Street in downtown El Paso. It's a mass-market paperback in decent shape, with a small coffee stain on the back cover and a dog-eared page near chapter 7. The cover features a black silhouette and the title in bold white letters. Inside the first page there's a yellow sticky note that says 'For Casey' in neat handwriting and a tiny star-shaped sticker on the back cover. If this belongs to someone, I figured it might have sentimental value, and I'd really like to help get it back to its owner.

Gray Nike running shoes found

I found a pair of gray Nike running shoes this afternoon around 3:45pm in the parking lot behind the Target on Gateway Boulevard West in El Paso, SW TX. They’re men’s size 10, with a gray mesh upper, black swoosh, and a white sole. One shoe has a small coffee stain on the toe and a tiny blue tag tucked under the tongue that says 'Maverick'. They’re lightly worn and clean overall, with only minor scuffs. If these are yours, tell me the brand, size, and that little blue tag to confirm, and I’ll get them back to you soon.

Black Sony Bluetooth headset in case

Found this black wireless Bluetooth headset this afternoon around 2:15pm outside the Starbucks on Stanton Street in El Paso, Southwest TX. It’s a Sony WH-CH510 in a soft black case, with a small blue star sticker on the zipper and a tiny dent on the right earcup. It looks lightly used and there was no charging cable with it. I’m hoping to reunite it with its owner, and I left it here for pickup. If this seems like yours, drop a message so we can figure out a meetup.

Red Le Creuset Dutch oven found near Mesa St

I found a red Le Creuset 5-quart Dutch oven this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind Market Street on N. Mesa Street in El Paso. It's in great condition overall—glossy enamel on the outside, white interior, and the knob on the lid still feels solid. There's a tiny chip on the rim and a small heart-shaped scratch along the side that makes it easy to identify. On the bottom there's a "Made in France" stamp and a faint owner sticker peeling off; I figured someone might be missing a family heirloom. If this belongs to you, drop me a message here and we can arrange pickup or transfer through the app.
