Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Lansing? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Lansing; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Lansing with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found pins near Lansing State Capitol.

I was walking toward the State Capitol steps for lunch around 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday when I spotted a small zip-top bag tucked behind a planter, full of enamel pins. The pins include Lansing landmarks and a few club badges, all well loved and a little scratched from years of wear. I held onto them and turned them in at the downtown lost-and-found, hoping the owner would see them quickly. If these belong to you, they’re here safe with me, and I’m glad to help bring them home.

FOUND scarf in Lansing near the Capitol

On Saturday at 5:20 p.m., I found a scarf lying on a bench near the Lansing City Market in Old Town Lansing. It's a charcoal-gray knit with a soft fringe, and it carries a faint cinnamon scent from a nearby bakery. No tag was visible, just the warm promise it clearly offers on a chilly evening. The street was busy, but there was no sign of someone looking for it, so I picked it up and kept it safe. I can’t imagine anyone wandering the block without it in the wind. I hope this post helps the rightful owner recognize it and bring it home.

Found sheet music near the Capitol in Lansing

This afternoon, around 3:15 pm, I found a stack of sheet music on a bench outside the Michigan State Capitol building in Lansing. I was walking along the Grand River Trail toward Old Town when a few pages fluttered loose and landed at my feet. The collection looks like a beginner's recital set—lots of treble clef scribbles and a faded cover that says 'Violin Duets, 1938.' I tucked it in my bag to keep it safe, hoping the owner recognizes it soon.

Cream duvet cover with navy piping and monogram

I found a cream queen-size duvet cover with navy piping this morning around 9:15 a.m. in the parking lot behind the Capitol Building on Capitol Ave in Lansing. It’s soft cotton, a bit wrinkled from being in my car, with a small navy monogram 'M' embroidered in the top corner. The fabric is clean, no stains or tears, and there’s a subtle diamond weave along the edge. There were no matching pillowcases attached. I know how easy it is to misplace bedding during a move, and I’d love to reunite it with its owner—check the monogram and reach out through the app if this looks like yours.

White ceramic planter with turquoise rim

I found a white ceramic planter with a small pothos plant outside the Frandor Shopping Center in Lansing, near the Target entrance, this afternoon around 2:30pm. The planter is about 14 inches tall, has a glossy glaze, with a thin turquoise hand-painted stripe around the rim and a tiny chip on the bottom edge. The pothos is healthy, leaves variegated green and cream that trail over the sides. It looked cared for, so I figured someone might be missing it. If this belongs to you, I’d love to get it back to you—it's a nice piece and I hate to see it go to waste.

Nintendo Switch OLED with neon Joy-Cons found in Lansing

I found a Nintendo Switch OLED with neon red/blue Joy-Cons yesterday around 4pm in the parking lot behind the Lansing Center on Michigan Ave. It was tucked in a gray protective case with a Mario sticker on the dock, and the screen has a clear protector in place. The device looks solid overall, just a small scratch on the back of the dock and a tiny scuff on the left Joy-Con. I know how attached folks can be to a gaming setup, so I’m hoping to get it back to its owner. If this sounds like yours, email me at [email protected] and we can meet up near the Lansing Center to return it.
